Dawn Maria DeCosta is a self-taught artist born in New London, Connecticut. Currently residing in Boston, Massachusetts, Dawn maintains a studio in her home. Bold colors and textures compose her paintings, inspired by graffiti-like marks, scrapes, layers and noise against vivid planes. Her work evolves from a 2013 exhibit, Poppy Pressure where she deconstructed the poppy flower yielding spontaneous results. She paints in acrylic, ink, and watercolor, incorporating mixed media and graffiti. “Spontaneity is a key factor in my expression as I paint without conscious reasoning. As quickly as I embrace a medium, I remove it, adapting to the changes as the painting takes form. For me personally, the capacity of color is powerful and I hope to convey an infectious, emotive power in my work.”

Dawn Maria DeCosta is the Executive Director of the Thich Nhat Hanh Center for Mindfulness in Public Health based in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The Thich Nhat Hanh Center for Mindfulness in Public Health empowers people around the globe to live with purpose, equanimity, and joy through the practice of mindfulness.
